Media companies are starting to recognize the value of spare time. This is especially true of the major networks (NBC, CBS, etc) and the major cellular carriers (Verizon Wireless, etc). Media companies are creating micro-content delivered via mobile phones, essentially packing mini-episodes (with ads, of course) into bite-sized chunks that people can watch during lunch.
They call it “video-snacking.”
Among cellular carriers, Verizon Wireless offers a V-Cast service that streams a broad selection of short episodes from leading content providers like Animal Planet and BET. People watch these clips on their cell phones, as they wait in line.
Another company, MobiTV is a serious provider of mobile video content.
Media companies feel that short amounts of people’s spare time have value, and so do we. The difference is, we want to harness that potential human energy for social good.
